Day 55 "The Waver"

I remember the first time I saw him. He calls himself, Jack, but his real name is Marvin. He was sitting on his chair on his front porch which happened to be on one of the busier roads in our community, waving to each car as it went by. My car was no exception. So naturally I found myself waving back and proceeded along on my way. He was an older gentleman, beyond his working years. But there he was extending a wave and a smile to each passerby. I didn't think much about about it at the time but it did brighten my day. The next day, there he was again. And the next. I started to look forward to Jack's wave each time I drove by his house. And on the days that he wasn't there, there seemed to be something missing in my day. Interesting, isn't it, how such a little gesture can have such an encouraging effect upon us? But what I found encouraging was that Jack wasn't looking to get something back. He simply found a joy in giving something to others-even if it was a simple wave. The same could be said about a smile. A word of encouragement. Taking a few moments of your time to spend with someone. We were created for community, not isolation.
"And let us consider how we may spur one another to love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another- all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:24
"that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith."
Romans 1:12
"Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edifica- tion." Romans 14:19
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perserverance; and to perserverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." 2 Peter 1:5-7
Interesting how everything seems to come back to love again, isn't it? It is no wonder why loving is so important. Love is the antithesis to focusing on "self." Think about it. When ever you have sinned or gotten yourself into trouble, whose interests were being fulfilled? I think you will find that it was your own. If your interest were continually focused on the best interest of others, what sin would you still commit? And even if actions only affected yourself, if you placed your interest on loving God through your actions and thoughts, what sin would you still be vulnerable to commit?
With the Coronavirus affecting us more and more each day, let us look for ways to encourage one another and show what it means to really love. As I have said so many times, our time here on Earth is short and brief. What will you give your life away to?
Someone once said, "Be careful how you spend your day, today, because you are spending a day of your life to pay for it."

It was just a simple wave. But it did much to lighten my spirit.
Until tomorrow...
