Day 139 "The Power of Words"

ree

My grandson, Gabriel, has his birthday today. He just turned four. But for a three year old just turning four, he is truly a unique individual in his own right. Besides having his own insights into things, he is quick to pick up on the actions and sayings by others. Just the other day, Robyn, my wife, went for a walk with him. In their talk, Robyn happened to quip the remark, "What in the world!" Now, as you may have guessed, this saying has been added to his verbal repertoire. "What in the world!" he recites with enthusiasm, a phrase that one person says to another person in reaction to a completely ridiculous situation. Coming from a four year old newbie, it is pretty funny. How quickly our kids pick up on what is said and done around them.

I remember an incident that took place a while back that I happened to observe. A father was verbally chastising his young boy for something he had done. I overheard the words "stupid," "no good," "nothing right," coming out of the father's mouth in the direction of his son whose head was hung down as he stood motionless not knowing what to do. I couldn't believe I was hearing the things I was hearing, and in public for everyone to see. "Do you have any idea of what you are doing to the character and soul of this young boy?" I wanted to shout out at this father. I was heartbroken as I felt each negative thing that the father was saying to his son was chiseling away at the potential good in that little boy's heart, mind, and soul.

Words have power! What we say and how we say them has an impact.

"Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." Proverbs 16:24

"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight,Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalms 19:14

"See what they spew from their mouths— the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, “Who can hear us?” Psalms 59:7

"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Psalms 119:103

"The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction."

Proverbs 1:21

"The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered." Proverbs 17:27

"The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you— they are full of the Spirit and life." John 6:63

Through the power of our words, we each can help lift the spirit of another person upwards, or we can tear it down one chiseling remark at a time. Who be you? Let love shine light on your pathway.

Each moment of time comes but once our way, so what will you do with it? We each leave a chisel mark on each other.

In his love, see you tomorrow...
