Day 137 "When Love Grows Cold"

ree

A while back, I came across something in my reading of the Bible that really caught my attention. Jesus was having a conversation with his disciples on the Mount of Olives in the 24th chapter of the book of Matthew. And then he begins to divulge signs and occurrences of things that will take place in the later days on this planet.

"Because of the increased wicked- ness, the love of most will grow cold." Matthew 24:12

Two things I took away from this verse. First, it is the polar opposite of what Christ said was the highest and greatest commandment:

"Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. That is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus spoke of a love which builds up and brings people together. Wickedness places oneself before the interest of others and breeds selfishness and greed. Fear permeates when there arises the concern that one might lose what one has accumulated for one's own personal use.

And secondly, the visual effects when love turns cold. When love grows cold, fear and betrayal become the standard norms.

"At that time many will betray and hate each other," Matthew 24:10

"Black Lives Matter," incidents of greed and hoarding relating to the Coronavirus, rioting, gang activities, wars, poverty, hunger, and the list marches onward. All of these things have a common denominator: our inability to have love for our fellow man.

As an individual, you cannot control the world. But you can still make a difference. As one who is rooted and deeply established in love, your life will stand out like a lighthouse in the midst of the stormy seas for those who seek refuge from such evilness and fear. And when they come to your door and inquire of the light that radiates outward from your house, may you be able to steer them in the direction of the only light that really matters: Jesus Christ, himself!

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

Love will always be the answer to coldness. The question will be in those dark days, who will be willing to keep the coals of love warm and glowing for others?

"The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6

*********************************************************************************

I am reminded of the chorus in the song What the World Needs Now Is Love which was composed back in 1965 by Burt Bacharach with the lyrics by Hal David:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love It's the only thing that there's just too little of What the world needs now is love, sweet love, No not just for some but for everyone.

Imagine what the world would look like if we all took more interest in loving?

In his love, see you tomorrow....
