The other day, President Trump came under a hailstorm of protests when he held this photo opportunity in from of St. John's Episcopal Church. Designed for show, the president had a crowd of peaceful protesters removed from the area so that this photo shoot could be taken. But the message that President Trump, perhaps, wanted to deliver was loudly drummed out by several things. First, Trump merely is holding the Bible and provides no information as to what is inside it and how it can affect our lives. Secondly, he is holding it upside down, which simply implies his lack of attention to the details. Thirdly, he didn't make comments nor direct people towards God which is what the Bible is all about. Fourthly, and importantly, this photo implies that merely holding the Bible makes a difference in someone's life and states that the person holding the Bible is a man of God. Far from the truth, the only way a person's life is changed is getting to know God and God's love for us by opening the Bible and reading it. The last time I checked, osmosis was still not a viable way to learn.
Now, what President Trump could have said is the following: "I hold this Bible today which we as Christians believe it is God's word to us. In its pages you will find that it has the ability to changed our lives and bring out the best in all of us. It establishes that the greatest commandment, the greatest rule to follow is to love- love God with all your heart and love your fell0w man as God first loved and accepted you." Now, that is what President Trump could have said if he really was a man of God and took the time to open the Bible and read it.
The good news is that the Bible can still open your eyes to understanding God's love and acceptance for you if you will take the time to read it, regardless if the president of the United States holds it in his hands or not. And in doing so, I believe God will bring out the best in you and help you to bring out the best in others.
" For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10
