"Carpe Diem" has long been implied to "Seize The Day." In psychology, it is called being "mindful."
Mindfulness
What does it mean to be mindful? ...
Merriam-Webster defines mindfulness:
“the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” Basically, mindfulness means being aware of and controlling your experience.
So, basically, mindfulness means to be completely present in the moment: completely aware of your surroundings, what is taking place around you, and being in touch and aware of your feelings and reactions that are going on within you. To be mindful, then, is the implication that you are in control of the moment rather than the moment being in control of you. Therefore, to "Seize the Day" (Carpe Diem) is to be actively engaged in taking control over your your day by being mindful of what is going on around you throughout the whole day. But if you are like me, a day is a long time to practice constant mindfulness. However, I considered, I can seize the moment. And then the next moment. And then the moment after that one. Bite size pieces I can handle. And here is the thing: discipline forms habits which form character. Discipline yourself to live consistently in the moment and after awhile, it will be a natural way of living out your entire day.
Coupled with love, seizing the moment may just be the most powerful means by which to live your life, both for personal healing and growth and for affecting the lives of your fellow man for the better.
