I remember the first time I heard the song "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me.
The song was chronologized in the movie under the same name. Written by Bart Millard, the song was purchased by Amy Grant and was to be part of her comeback. But when it came time for her to debut the song, something within her prevented her from singing the song. Instead, Amy Grants calls Bart Millard from out of the audience and hands him the microphone, "This is your song. You should sing it." This was the song that put Mercy Me on the map.
Look over the words. It's easy to let go and embrace what we all need: the encouragement of hope.
"I Can Only Imagine"
I can only imagine what it will be like When I walk, by your side I can only imagine what my eyes will see When your face is before me I can only imagine I can only imagine
Surrounded by You glory What will my heart feel Will I dance for you Jesus Or in awe of You be still Will I stand in your presence Or to my knees will I fall Will I sing hallelujah Will I be able to speak at all I can only imagine I can only imagine
I can only imagine when that day comes When I find myself standing in the Son I can only imagine when all I would do is forever Forever worship You I can only imagine I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory What will my heart feel Will I dance for You, Jesus Or in awe of you be still Will I stand in your presence Or to my knees will I fall Will I…
Surrounded by Your glory What will my heart feel Will I dance for You, Jesus Or in awe of you be still Will I stand in Your presence Or to my knees will I fall Will I sing hallelujah Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine hey ya ah I can only imagine yeah yeah I can only imagine I can only imagine ey ey ey" I can only imagine I can only imag...
What I find fascinating is when Amy Grant, probably knowing she had a hit on her hands, decided to forgo her own self interests and promoted Bart Millard's instead. This, to me, is the essence of love-putting others before oneself. The other thing that grabbed my attention is that we all have something unique that we can contribute to the betterment of society. We each just need to find that unique thing that God particularly designed us to be and to do. So, what's yours?
