Day 130 "Wars and Rumors of Wars"

ree

I started today going on Google and looking for all the important things that have happened over the years on June 30th. What I found were many dates referring to wars and battles, skirmishes, revolts, occupations, invasions, and massacres. We as human beings are a cantankerous lot. It always seems like we are in a spat or fight with someone somewhere over something. Unfortunately, the cost of war is hardly worth the amount of lives lost and property damaged. When the war is over, little has been done to rectify the original differ-ences. But we continue to battle onward over the ages.

Over two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ showed us a better way to live with our brothers.

"If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes

your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them." Luke 6:29

"Do not be overcome by evil, but over come evil with good." Romans 12:21

Most of us would find it difficult to turn the cheek to someone who just injured or insulted us. But, perhaps, that is exactly what is needed to change people's lives, including our own.

Imagine where we might spiritually be had not Christ walked the road to Calvary and died on the cross for our sins and to make us holy before God. Surely, we have done much to offend a just and holy God by the things that we each have done in this life and deserve nothing of his love and grace. And, yet, through Christ, all is forgiven and forgotten. It was his love for the Father and his love for us that allowed him to endure what he needed to endure. That is what love does, it puts the interest of others before one's own.

Christ told the people of his time that the greatest commandment to keep was to love. In a world full of wars and rumors of wars, we would do well to remember his words and seek to act out our lives in love and be ever mindful that eternity is upon us. Perhaps, then, we can find better ways to solve our problems and learn better ways to get along with one another.

"We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:18

Jesus calls us to a better way of living. Be in the world but not part of the world. Live as sojourners making your way home.

In his love, see you tomorrow...
